After an electrifying TWIST Berlin show at Ahoy! Berlin in February the show hosts reached out to organize a special London vs. Berlin episode. This time three startups from London will compete with three startups from Berlin and Jason Calacanis and his sidekick Tyler Crowley will pick the best 3. Let’s see which startup hub has more to offer!
If you missed the TWIST Berlin show at the beginning of the year, this is your chance to make up for it. The last show was truly magnificent with interesting pitches by passionate entrepreneurs, an audience that supported the Berlin startups like a force and a rant by Jason Calacanis against the Samwer brothers and German copy cats that become legendary.
SquadMail, one of the finalists of the last TWIST Berlin actually ended up winning the startup competition at the next conference last week.
The event will be held on June 8th at the Ahoy! Berlin co-working space with the actual live stream between Berlin, London and the show hosts in Los Angeles taking place from 21:00-22:00 CET. After the show we will do what we do best at Ahoy! and throw a big party to celebrate the winners and entrepreneurship in general.
Any startup in Berlin can apply to pitch in the show. A jury will screen the top 15 applicants in a pre-contest one day prior to the actual show and choose their 3 picks. Don’t miss the chance to present your product to the world and get valuable feedback by the experienced show duo. The sign up process will start today and you can do so here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dE95THUtVTAwdjA4WTdUQ3ZvRzdWbGc6MQ
To support this great event we are still looking for cooperation partners and sponsors. Please reach out to me or Lutz Villalba if you are interested.

Interview with App’Olympics Berlin Organizer Mathias Fiedler (CTO, Artflakes)
This weekend is blessed with two great hackathons. Apart from the PhotoHackDay, that TechBerlin reported on earlier, there is the BeMyApp Mobile App Olympics, a 48-hour hackathon and startup bootcamp that unites idea generators, designers and developers in their quest to create some kick ass products. The event will be taking place simutanously in seven cities around the world: San Francisco, New York, Dallas, London, Paris, Zurich and yes, good ol’ BERLIN!
Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of such an extraordinary experience and come join other startup ethusiasts for a three day fun ride at Ahoy! Berlin.
The event will start on Friday at 7pm with people pitching their app ideas to fellow designers and developers. After teams have formed around the best ideas, there will be two days of straight hacking with all the clichés of little sleep and lots of Club Mate that go with it. On Sunday a prominent jury will vote for the best app idea and the winning teams await great prizes such as a trip to the Silicon Valley with accommodation covered. The event will finish in Ahoy! Berlin fashion with a wild party and our favorite DJ Daddy Hemingway spinning the tunes!
There are still some spots left for developers as well as party tickets (includes the prize ceremony) for people who do not wish to go through the 48-hour craziness, but want to soak in the unique experience nevertheless. Check out the interview above for more information on what to expect.

Thanks to Mathias Fiedler and David Link for making this great event happen!
The Jason Calacanis Rant against the Samwer Brothers and German Copying on TWiST Berlin
After acknowledging the innovative new startup spirit in Berlin (“this is a fiery group”) during the TWiST Berlin show, the host Jason Calacanis starts a rant against the Samwer Brothers and how they had ruined the image of the German startup landscape.
He said that Germany was getting a “bad name” because of the Samwer brothers whom he referred to as “lying and cheating … photocopying thieves”. According to Jason people around the world started to believe that Germans are not original thinkers and that this was not true! He asked the audience to “boo and hiss” at the Samwers whenever someone runs into them and to convince one’s friends to not work for them.
The audience loudly cheered in consent! It seemed that finally someone with broad international reach called out what many Berliners think.
Interview with TWIST Berlin organizer Radek Rybicki
Radek’s story on how he ended up as CTO at a chemical company with a fascinating product outside Berlin is intriguing and we will have a more detailed interview about that soon. In this short interview Radek talks briefly about his background and how he managed to get TWIST to do a show in Berlin, which Radek organizes together with Lutz Villalba. TWIST, the popular startup show hosted by Jason Calacanis and Tyler Crowley, is actually part of the reason why Radek left the corporate world and became an entrepreneur. Awesome stuff!
BTW: MORE TICKETS TO THE SHOW WERE RELEASED TODAY. THEY ARE SELLING OUT VERY FAST, SO GET YOUR TICKET NOW: http://twistberlin.eventbrite.com/

Thanks Bjorn!

First of all sorry for not announcing the winner of the “Made in Berlin” Badge Contest before X-Mas as promised. The days before the holidays just turned out to be very busy with the opening of Ahoy! Berlin and the soft launch of Jobslike.me, where I am also involved with. So sorry for the delay!
However, both the submission deadline as well as the deadline for voting on submissions were kept in place and the results are a great success:
In the end it turned out to be a narrow race among three great contenders. Without further due, let me present you the top three:
3rd Place (Nadine Roßa of Launchco)

2nd Place (Jose Masaoy of Researchgate)

1st Place and Grand Winner (Bjorn Isaksen of Tonic Design & National Beauty)

Congratulations Bjorn! You won a free rental of the cinema at Ahoy! Berlin, the oldest cinema in Berlin which boasts 80 seats and a stage and can be rented for events, workshops or conferences.
Many thanks to everyone who participated in this contest for the time and effort they put into this. There was some truly great work done!
I will ask everyone else who participated if they allow me to share their submissions so i can showcase the other entries in a separate post. This way all these talented designers can present their work to a new audience. Will also ask Bjorn if he is ok with other sites integrating his badge and sending me the png in different sizes.
The Berlin startup scene is hot at the moment or as Soundcloud Founder Eric Wahlforss said it best: “Berlin has gone totally Bananas, there is so much going on!”
That shouldn’t be big news to anyone anymore, after countless international media reports have proclaimed the city’s growing ecosystem to becoming Europe’s Silicon Valley.
But it is not just media and investors that show increased interest in our awesome startup community. International tech companies are following suit!
TechBerlin is excited to announce that Twitter will be hosting its first developer event in Germany on January 26th, from 6-9pm at Mobile Suite in Prenzlauer Berg. Together with Ciarán O’ Leary of Early Bird Capital VC, TechBerlin is supporting the event.
You can find the official Twitter blog post with a link to the sign-up page here:

Please register if you want to attend! Looking forward to seeing you there.

Yes, i know. Too many events going on these days. And you are probably still hangover from the Ahoy! Berlin Opening. But trust me: don’t miss these innovative developers, designers and marketeers passing through Berlin for two hours today. Come by for a sponsored lunch and find out why Wired magazine calls the StartupBus “as close to blood sport as Silicon Valley entrepreneurship gets”.
StartupBus US
It all started in the US, with a spontaneous bus trip from San Francisco to Austin for the South by SouthWest Conference. On board: Top notch developers, designers and marketeers. The goal: To hack together a winning product in 48 hours.
Within two years the initiative has grown significantly in the States. While 50 people in applied in 2010 (with 25 being selected), the trip in spring of 2011 saw over 300 applicants which came down to 40 teams and six buses.
StartupBus Europe
The StartupBus is now in Europe for the first time with a mission to road-trip through the continent, coming up with great products on the way and pitching them to a Jury at LeWeb in Paris at the end of the week. There is even a game where anyone can buy virtual shares of the teams and startups that are built just now on the bus.
Lunch in Berlin
So today for 2 hours around 25 developers, designers and marketeers from all over Europe and the US will stop in Berlin, where TechBerlin and Ahoy! Berlin will host a lunch at I Due Forni in Mitte that is sponsored by Tagesangebote and Startupbootcamp. Come join us for lunch, meet fellow entrepreneurs and listen to their pitches.
Please don’t forget to rsvp on our Facebook event page.

A lot of people from other parts of Germany and abroad have asked me about Berlin’s hottest startup. Since it is the perception within the whole community that ultimately counts, I pass that question on.
You can vote and find out what the community perceives as the hottest startup here. You can make multiple votes, so next to voting for your own startup you can show which other startups have your love.

More and more Berlin startups design “Made in Berlin” badges for their websites and thus publicly showing their love for this great city (examples below).
ABOUT TIME TO MAKE A CONTEST FOR THE BEST DESIGNED BADGE
The Goal
The goal is to show off the city’s design skills and have the community vote for their favorite badge.
It is not that we want to find the one-badge-for-all-solution that all startups should be using in the future. We do however ask all entrants to make their badge publicly available to everyone so that those startups who do not want to create their own badge can adapt someone else’s.

Here some recent examples (We are looking forward to your design!)
